At the top of Cerro Corcovado, 709 meters above sea
level, stands one of the most important symbols of the city and of all Brazil,
the statue of Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro. The Christ Redeemer, which
was inaugurated on October 12, 1931 and is visited by 2 million tourists a
year, is an icon of the city and country and was recently declared one of the new
Seven Wonders of the World. For the coating of the work several materials were
studied to finally choose the "stone-soap". Although it is a weak
material, it can even be scratched with nails is extremely resistant to the
passage of time, does not deform, or cracks with temperature variations. The
construction of more than 1,000 tons, combines engineering, architecture and
sculpture and nobody died during the titanic construction, something really
atypical for the time. The monument measures in total 38m of height: 8m the
pedestal and 30m the statue.
